Appearing as a Device and Not as a Disk Places the Fault Precisely

The decode: what each list requires, and what the gap between them means

What the first list is reporting: hardware presence. To appear among devices, the drive announced itself and stated what kind of thing it is — that exchange happened successfully, which is why it is listed and described as functioning.

Why "functioning" there means less than it sounds: that status describes whether the operating system loaded a driver and established communication. It is a statement about the connection rather than about the storage, and a drive can be perfectly "functional" at that level while returning nothing.

What the second list requires that the first does not: capacity and structure. To appear in volume management, the drive must report how large it is and allow its beginning to be read — which means the controller has to have established access to the memory behind it.

So what the gap tells us: the controller completes its introduction and cannot reach the storage it manages. It can say what it is; it cannot say what it holds — which places the fault precisely between those two capabilities.

Why the brief appearances are the most informative detail: occasionally an unidentified, uninitialised disk shows up and then goes. That is the controller partially succeeding — getting far enough to report a device with no readable structure, then losing it again. A completely failed controller would never appear at all.

Why "uninitialised" there is not what it appears: the system describes a disk as uninitialised when it cannot read the structure at its start. That is a failure to read, not a discovery that the drive is blank, and the offer to initialise it is an offer to write an empty structure over the portfolio.
