The decode: what the two observations mean together
Why the light means less than it appears: the indicator on a stick is generally driven by the power reaching the housing. It illuminates when the connector receives current, and it will continue to do so whether or not the controller behind it does anything at all.

What that does over time: repeated flexing fatigues solder joints and can crack the board's copper traces. Neither failure is visible from outside, and both produce exactly this — a device that receives power and cannot execute, because a connection somewhere on the board has opened.
Why it happens without any single incident: nobody bends a stick deliberately. It is sat on, pressed against the inside of a bag, and levered slightly every time a cable or a hand knocks it while inserted — and the damage accumulates across thousands of small events.
