A Login Guards the Running System and Leaves the Disk Open

Her enquiry describes two obstacles that are not obstacles. Two old laptops due for recycling, from which she would like the photographs first: "one turns on but I can't remember the password, and the other won't turn on — I think the charger port is broken." Neither of those prevents anything. A forgotten login is not encryption, and a dead charging port has no bearing on a drive that comes out of the machine.

The decode: what a login password actually protects

What an account password does: controls who can sign in to a running operating system. The system checks it before granting access to a session, and that is the whole of its function.

What it does not do: alter what is written on the disk. Files sit on the medium in ordinary readable form, and the password is a gate in front of the system rather than a lock on the data.

So what follows practically: remove the drive, connect it to another computer, and the files are simply there. No password is requested, because nothing on the drive is waiting for one — the machine that would have asked is no longer involved.

Why that is worth stating plainly: being locked out of a machine feels like being locked out of the data. People write off computers over forgotten passwords, and on machines of that generation there was usually nothing to write off.

How that differs from encryption, which is the distinction that matters: full-disk encryption makes the contents themselves unreadable without a key. Removing the drive achieves nothing, because the data is not in readable form anywhere. That is a genuine obstacle and it is not what she has — machines of that era did not encrypt by default, and it should be verified rather than assumed.

What the second machine's fault means: nothing at all for the data. A charging port is a power problem, and once the drive is out, whether the laptop can be powered is irrelevant. It is the same retrieval as the first.

So neither of these is a recovery: both are removals. Two drives out, two drives read, photographs copied — and the machines can then be disposed of without further thought.

Which raises the thing that should be said before she recycles anything: the same fact that helps her helps whoever acquires those machines. A login password protects nothing from somebody holding the drive, so the drives should be removed and destroyed, or securely erased, rather than sent away inside the laptops.
