The decode: three places this fault can live, and how to settle it

Why the symptom is ambiguous: a computer discovers a network unit by asking the network for it. If nothing answers, the computer reports the same absence whether the unit is switched off, unreachable, confused, or holding a failed drive — the message describes the silence, not its cause.

The first place the fault can live — the network: an address that has changed, a router that has forgotten the unit, a name that no longer resolves, a cable or port that has failed. None of this involves the data at all, and the unit may be sitting perfectly healthy at an address nothing is asking for.

The second place — the unit itself: the small computer inside the enclosure that presents the storage to the network. Its own software can fail while the drive behind it remains entirely intact, which is a common and very recoverable situation.

The third place — the drive: the storage has failed, and the unit cannot present what it cannot read. This is the only one of the three that concerns the data, and it is indistinguishable from the others when viewed from a computer.

What separates them cheaply: the unit's own behaviour, observed directly. Whether it powers, what its indicators do, whether it completes its start-up sequence and whether it responds to an address rather than a name — those observations distinguish a network problem from a unit problem without touching the drive.

Why manufacturer troubleshooting exhausting itself is informative: those procedures are written for network and configuration faults, which are the common causes. Working through them without result makes the benign explanations less likely, though it does not confirm the drive.

What settles the question definitively: the drive is taken out of the enclosure and read directly. That removes the network, the unit and its software from the question entirely — if the drive reads, the fault was never in the storage, and if it does not, its condition is established directly rather than inferred.

Why the drive cannot simply be plugged in and browsed: network units generally write their own volume format, which an ordinary computer does not recognise.
