A Crash Does Not Break a Drive, but the Power Loss With It Can

The decode: how the two events connect, and what he got right

Why software cannot break a mechanism directly: a crash is a program or an operating system ceasing to function. It cannot instruct a drive to damage itself, and no sequence of failed software reaches inside a sealed assembly to move anything.

Why his suspicion is nevertheless well-founded: a crash rarely happens on its own terms. A machine that crashes is frequently restarted abruptly, powered off at the button, or loses power entirely — and if the external drive was connected and spinning, it lost its supply mid-rotation.
