It Found a Filesystem and Could Not Identify It
Her enquiry quotes a message that is more specific than it looks. Photographs taken one day, and the next "the camera is displaying the error message unrecognised file format. I've tried using file recovery software but not even that worked." That is not the message a camera gives for a missing or dead card — it means the card responded, the camera read its structure, and what it found was not something it could interpret.

The decode: what the camera did before it complained
What had to work for that message to appear: the card powered up, its controller initialised, it presented itself, and the camera read the region where a filesystem's identifying structure sits. All of that succeeded — which excludes a dead card, a dead controller and a connection fault together.
Why the wording is precise rather than generic: a camera that finds no card says so. A camera that finds a card it cannot read at all reports a card error. Reporting an unrecognised format means it got as far as looking at the structure and did not recognise what was there.
What that indicates: the filesystem's primary structures are damaged or absent. Cameras support a small set of filesystems and identify them by markers at defined positions — so a card whose markers are corrupted reads as a card containing something unidentifiable rather than something broken.
Why the timing is informative: it worked one day and failed the next with no use in between. That excludes anything she did and points at either a write that did not complete during the last session, or a card at the end of its endurance failing between sessions.
Why the recovery software also failed, and this is the useful part: consumer tools generally locate a filesystem and scan it. Where the identifying structure is damaged, the tool cannot determine what it is looking at and reports nothing — not because there is nothing there, but because it needs the same markers the camera needed.
What works instead: ignoring the primary structures entirely and searching the medium for the backup copies filesystems maintain at defined offsets, or for the content itself by signature. Neither approach depends on the markers that are missing.
Why the photographs are very likely intact: images were written once each and never touched again. What has failed is the small region describing them, which is written on every exposure and therefore wears and corrupts far ahead of the content.
What must not happen: no formatting. The camera will offer it, repeatedly, and it is worded as the remedy for exactly this message.
