His enquiry rests hope on a small light. A drive holding photograph memories which, plugged in a year or so ago, showed that "the light on the drive lights up" — and beyond that, nothing. An indicator lighting is the least a drive can do, and it is worth being clear about what it does and does not mean: it confirms the drive is receiving power, and it says nothing at all about whether the drive is working.

The decode: what a light does and does not establish
What the indicator actually reports: that power has reached the drive. An indicator is wired to the supply and illuminates when current arrives — which is the very first thing in a long chain of things that all have to work, and the only one the light confirms.
What has to happen after the light, none of which it shows: the board has to initialise, the motor has to bring the platters to speed, the heads have to load and find their bearings, the drive has to read its own internal configuration, and it has to introduce itself to the computer. The light is on before any of that and stays on regardless of whether it succeeds.
Why this matters for his expectation: a lit indicator can feel like a sign of life, a reason to hope the drive is basically fine. It is not evidence either way — a completely failed drive with a working supply lights its indicator exactly as a healthy one does.
