The decode: why both reassuring details were warnings
Why the drive being connected is the critical fact: it was running when it fell. A drive at rest has its heads parked clear of the recording surfaces; a running drive has them flying microscopically above spinning platters — and the difference in vulnerability between those two states is enormous.
