Taking Longer to Be Found Is a Controller Problem, Not a Speed Problem
This enquiry contains a fortnight of warning that nobody could reasonably have read. A portable solid-state drive, about a year old, where "recently my laptop was slow finding it, and since Wednesday it doesn't show up. Disk management knows it is there, but says zero capacity and no media." A drive getting slower to appear is not a drive getting slower — it is a controller taking longer to complete its introduction, and that is a different and more serious thing.

The decode: two weeks of signal, and what the final state means
Why the slowness was not what it seemed: a drive that transfers slowly is a drive struggling to move data. A drive that takes longer to be found is struggling with something earlier — the exchange in which it identifies itself and reports what it is, which happens before any data moves at all.
Why that distinction matters: the introduction is handled by the controller, not by the storage. A controller taking progressively longer to complete it is a controller in difficulty, and difficulty of that kind tends to end in the controller not completing it at all — which is precisely what happened on the Wednesday.
What the final state is reporting: the device is listed, so it is present and answering at the most basic level. Reporting zero capacity and no medium means the controller can say that it exists but cannot say what it holds — it has not established access to the memory behind it, so it has nothing to report.
Why that is emphatically not an empty drive: the figures are zero because nothing is being read, not because nothing is there. A drive that had genuinely been erased would report its full capacity with nothing allocated — the absence of any capacity figure at all is the signature of a controller that cannot reach the storage, which is a different fault entirely.
Why the memory is very likely intact: the failure is in the part that manages and addresses the storage. The memory packages holding the data are separate components and are not implicated by a controller that cannot complete its start-up, which is exactly why a route past it exists.
What that route is: the device addressed through hardware that does not depend on the controller completing its introduction, the controller assessed and where necessary bypassed, and the memory read directly with the pattern by which data was distributed across it rebuilt in software.
Why age is not the explanation here: a year is nothing for a device of this kind. Solid-state failures do not generally announce themselves through wear, and a controller fault at a year old is a component failure rather than the drive having been used up.
What is worth saying about the missing backup: it is the commonest position there is, and it is worth being clear that nobody expects a device this new to fail. The useful part is what follows — once the material is back, it wants to exist in two places, because the value of a copy is that it is somewhere the original is not.
What must not happen: no initialising, no formatting, and no repeated connection attempts. A management view offering to initialise a drive it believes is blank is offering to write over exactly what a recovery reads.
