The decode: why writing fails before reading, and what that means for the photographs
Why the two capabilities are not equal: writing to flash is a considerably more demanding operation than reading it. It requires the controller to find space, place data, update its maps and verify the result, where reading requires only locating and returning what is already there.
Why that ordering is characteristic: a card losing capability loses the harder function first. Write errors appearing while reading still works is the normal shape of flash degradation, not an unusual combination.
