Opening It Answered One Question and Created Two More

His enquiry describes an investigation carried out in good faith. A clicking external drive where "I had a tool and took a quick look underneath, and there is a big scratch on the platter. It tries to boot up, which I hope is a good sign, but seems to get caught in a loop." He deserves a straight answer on all three parts — the mark may be less final than it looks, the opening has a cost of its own, and the repeated attempts are the thing doing active harm.

The decode: three separate things, answered plainly

First, what he saw may not be what it appears: a visible mark on a platter is not automatically a scratch through the recording layer. Material transferred from a failing head can leave a track that looks like damage and is deposit rather than removal — and the two are distinguished under magnification, not by eye.
