The decode: how to rank them, and why the order matters

Why this is not one job: the devices failed for different reasons at different times. Nothing connects the three faults except that she owned all of them, so each has its own condition and its own prospects.

Why that changes the approach fundamentally: she does not need all three to work. She needs one — and identifying which is most likely to yield is worth doing before any of them is worked on.

Which is most promising, and it is the second: a drive the laptop can see but not open. Being visible means it powers, spins, identifies itself and enumerates — the whole device chain works, and only the structures describing the content cannot be read. That is a logical fault on functioning hardware, which is the most recoverable class there is.

Why "seems to think it might be empty" supports that reading: a system reporting a drive as empty has read it and found nothing it recognises. That is a failure to interpret rather than a discovery — the content occupies the drive and nothing currently describes it.

Where the laptop ranks, and it is second: a machine that will not power is a host fault. Its drive is attached to it rather than part of it, and it comes out and reads on its own — so the smashed screen and the dead machine are both irrelevant to whether the content is reachable.

Why the year unplugged is worth noting: a machine failing to power after long storage is very often an aged supply component. That says nothing about the drive inside, which has been sitting unpowered and unchanged.
