Her enquiry reports a message that sends people down the wrong path. The decode: three messages, and what each is really reporting

Why the access message misleads: the same wording is used when a genuine permissions restriction applies. It is the system's general failure message for being unable to reach a location, and it appears whether the reason is a permission, a missing volume, or a structure it cannot interpret.

What makes permissions unlikely here: she tried several computers. Permissions belong to accounts and machines, so a restriction would not follow the drive to different systems — the behaviour travelling with the device points at the drive's own structures.

What the audible activity establishes: the drive is powered, spinning and doing something. The device is working well enough to be asked questions, which places the fault above the hardware and in what is stored.

What orphaned entries specifically are: directory records whose parent folder can no longer be found. A filesystem records files inside folders inside folders, and when a record describing a parent becomes unreadable, everything beneath it is still present but no longer attached to anything — so the content exists and nothing points at it.

Why that is a hopeful finding rather than an alarming one: orphans are recoverable. Reattaching entries to a reconstructed structure, or recovering them into a flat set, returns the files — what has been lost is the arrangement rather than the material.
