The Format Was Survivable and the Reuse Was Not

Her enquiry describes a loss discovered too late to contain. On a production, a card was "formatted before backing it up, and this wasn't discovered until a few days later — so we don't know exactly which card it was, and all the cards have already been reused with new footage recorded over." The format alone would have left almost everything recoverable. The reuse is what ended it, and the honest answer is that most of this footage is gone.

The decode: what each step cost, and what remains worth attempting

What the format did: cleared the index describing where clips sat. An in-camera format writes a fresh empty structure and marks the capacity as available, leaving the recorded video physically in place — at that point, the footage was substantially recoverable.

Why that is worth stating plainly: had the mistake been noticed that day and the card set aside, this would be a routine and largely successful recovery. The format was not the loss — it was the moment the material became vulnerable.

What the days of delay meant in practice: the cards went back into rotation. Video recording writes continuously and fills cards to capacity, so each subsequent use wrote new footage directly into the space the original clips occupied.

Why video overwriting is particularly complete: unlike documents, which occupy small scattered areas, recording fills a card sequentially from the beginning. A card refilled with new footage has had the great majority of its capacity written over, and overwritten data is not recoverable by any means.

Why not knowing which card it was compounds it: every card in the pool has to be treated as the candidate. That multiplies the work without improving the odds on any individual card, since each has been through the same reuse.

What is nevertheless worth attempting, stated without optimism: cards are rarely filled completely. If a subsequent shoot used less of a card's capacity than the original footage occupied, the remainder may still hold fragments — and clips are large and sequential, so a partially surviving one can still be assembled.

Why the realistic expectation is fragments rather than clips: what survives will be whatever was beyond the reach of later recording. That is likely to be partial, from the end of the original material, and may not include the specific content that matters.

What should happen immediately if anything is to be attempted: every card comes out of the rotation now. Each further shoot reduces what remains, and cards still in use are still being written to.

What the process lesson is, and it is the useful part of this: a card is not returned to the pool until its backup has been verified, not merely reported complete. The failure here was a card being formatted before anyone had confirmed the copy existed, and the second failure was reuse before anyone checked.

Why saying so now matters more than the recovery: the same rotation will be used on the next production. Verified-before-reuse is a rule that costs a few minutes and prevents exactly this.
