Freezing on Access Is One Thing, and a Deep Sound With It Is Another

The decode: why the sound decides the response

What freezing on access means on its own: the drive is reached, and then stalls when asked to read a particular region. A drive that hangs on folder access is meeting something it cannot read where the structures sit — which, by itself, could be a logical fault, damaged structures the deletion left behind.

Why the deletion is a plausible trigger for a logical fault: deleting files updates the drive's structures, and a lock-up partway through can leave them inconsistent. If that were the whole story, it would be a structure problem — recoverable by reading the drive and rebuilding from what survives.

Why the sound changes that reading entirely: a recurring deep sound is not what a logical fault produces. A structure problem is silent — it is information on the disk being wrong, not a mechanism in difficulty. A deep, repeating sound is the drive doing something physical, over and over.
