MacBook Recovery - 4th Jan 2011
Disk looked at by Mac Store and PC World - they could not recover the data as they could not
access the disk.
Client installed the last security update to OS X 10.4.11 and after reboot the system hung
at boot. Client rebooted several times but could not get pass question mark symbol.
Client took disk to Mac Store and PC World, they could not do anything as they could not
access the disk. PC World wanted to send disk to a recovery firm in England and charge £700+vat for the data recovery job.
The client delivered the disk to us. We then set about diagnosing the disk. The disk had
electronic and firmware corruption which is a common fault with Seagate disks. We upgraded
the electronics on disk and upgraded firmware code on disk. We then imaged disk and
processed the data. Recovery was 100%. Recovery took 48 hours and client was charged our standard fee of £249+vat.
Lacie Big Disk - 17th Jan 2011
Lacie 4 disk system used by a photographer to archive wedding and portrait sessions.
System was a 1 TB LaCie Big Disk Extreme 2 that consisted of 2 500GB drives in a raid 0 configuration. The Lacie system started making clicking noises and then began to disappear from the desktop. Client tried to access drive through disk utility but it didn't show up in there either. The clicking noise goes away from time to time, and then the light on the front of the drive just flashes rapidly. The client purchased a new enclosure and fitted the disks inside but system would still not load up. The client contacted LaCie Support who advised them to contact a specialist data recovery company to recover the data.
We received the system on a Monday morning and diagnosed the two disks. One disk in the Lacie system had a read/write head failure and as a result this was making the clicking noise.
We replaced the damaged read/write head assembly and performed a 100% image of the damaged disk. We also imaged the good disk and then recompiled the data from the two disk images and processed the Lacie system. Recovery was 100% and data was with client on the Wednesday, two days later.
Dell PowerBlade Server - 24th Jan 2011
Dell Raid 5 system with 5 disks. Used by a manufacturing company as their main server.
Raid array suffered a raid card failure along with one disk that failed in the raid array. Client installed a new raid card, replaced the damaged disk with a new disk and performed a rebuild of the raid 5 system. Rebuild stalled at 6% and wouldn't go any further. Client got the IT company that setup the raid 5 system to look at system. They couldn't get system up and running or recover any data.
The client is a regular customer who uses on a regular baiss to recover data from damaged laptop drives for their sales staff. Client sent us in raid system to recover data. We imaged the 4 working disks and fixed the damaged disk so we could image that as well. We then ran a series of traces to see what damage the partial rebuild had done to files on raid system. We recompiled the system and recovered all critical data for the clients business including an Exchange and SQL database system which was business critical as 100 people couldn't work without database and email system running. Recovery was completed within 28 hours of receiving system on a Sunday morning!
External Disk Recovery - 26th Jan 2011
Disk fell from a table whilst powered on. Disk contained Excel and Word documents.
External disk fell from a table while powered on. The drive worked for 15 minutes after the drop but started to make clicking noises and refused to load onto a windows 7 laptop. Client then tried to connect external drive to another 2 computers but the external drive just made clicking noises.
We received disk in and diagnosed the system. The fall to the external drive had caused internal damage to the read/write head assembly, motor and some minor damage to the disk platters. We recommened a platter exchange which involves moving the platters to another identical hard disk and reading off the data. We performed this service within 3 working days and we recovered 97% of the data. The 3% we could not recover was due to physical damage to the disk platters. Client was very happy as we recovered their work related documents.
