So no matter what the file system is, whether its Apple HFS+, Windows NTFS, Linux Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, XFS or ZFS we can recover your data for you. Lacie External drive systems also come preconfigured as Network Attached Storage devices (NAS) and means that they are setup in a multi disk Raid setup such as Raid 0, Raid 1 or Raid 5. We have recovered data from Lacie NAS Raid systems for many of the top UK and Ireland companies throughtout the last 10+ years.
Lacie systems have been extremely popular over the last few years due to their good name and robust technology. While very good hard disk drives, Lacie, like all other systems, they do fail. A sudden failure of the Lacie system normally means that the software firmware configuration or electronics has failed in most cases.
Recovery Process:
Depending on the type of Lacie system, the data recovery process can take several paths depending on the Lacie configuration of your system.
In all cases all hard disks sent in for recovery are diagnosed to establish cause of failure. We then go about resolving the hardware or software issue and get the drive to a state that we can perform a 100% image of the disk. We image all hard disks as standard during our recovery procedure. This ensures the intergity of the original hard disk.
We then work with the hard disk image to process the Lacie file system and extract the data.
We recover Lacie systems from all operating systems inclusing Apple Mac, Windows, Linux and Unix systems. So no matter whether its Apple HFS+, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, XFS or ZFS we can recover your data for you. If you are unsure what the file system configuration is we can also determine the configuration for you.
Lacie NAS Raid Configuration:
Lacie NAS External devices support several different data storage configurations, which provide the owner of the system with different data protection levels and different recovery chances if the Lacie NAS (Network Attached Storage) system fails.
RAID 0: This is the default Lacie NAS configuration for older Lacie NAS system's. Data is distributed across the drives. This is the best-performing configuration with maximum data capacity. A single drive failure causes loss of all the data. This method is gradually getting replaced with other raid configurations but is still being used in older Lacie NAS systems.
RAID 1: In this configuration two shared disks are mirrored. This configuration provides great speed but only half of the potential storage capacity. This configuration is rarely used on Buffalo NAS devices but we still see some Lacie NAS systems with this configuration.
JBOD: In this configuration data on the Lacie NAS System is spanned along all disks. This ensures full storage capacity and good performance. Single drive failure may cause all data loss. We also see this configuration on older Lacie NAS devices.
RAID 5: This is now the most popular and the default for the latest Lacie NAS systems. Data is distributed across the drives using backward parity rotation. This configuration is fast but space equal to one disk's capacity is lost. The Lacie NAS system will continue to operate normally even after single drive failure.
Lacie Hard drive systems support different interfaces. Some of the interfaces supported include: Lacie PATA Drives, Lacie SATA Drives, Lacie Portable Drives, Lacie Mobile Drives, Lacie IDE Drives, Lacie SATA Drives, Lacie SATA II Drives, Lacie SATA 2 Drives, Lacie SATA III Drives, Lacie SATA 3 Drives, Lacie eSATA, Lacie SAS Drives, Lacie SCSI Drives, iSCSI, Lacie ESDI Drives, Lacie Fibre Channel Drives, Lacie USB Drives, Lacie Firewire Drives and Lacie PCMCIA Drives.
Lacie systems have been extremely popular over the last few years due to their good name and robust technology. While very good hard disk drives, Lacie, like all other hard drives, they do fail. A sudden failure of the Lacie system normally means that the software configuration or electronics has failed in most cases.
Lacie hard disk devices are well-known for their factory firmware problems. Lacie Hard Drives contain Factory Firmware which is stored on the disk platters in the so-called System (Service) Area of the hard disk. If one of the disk modules becomes corrupted the whole hard disk micro-operating system can't boot up, the drive cannot initialise correctly and thus stops working. If you attempt to boot up from such a Lacie hard drive or read any data from it you would get "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter" or "Primary Master Hard Disk Fail" or "No operating system found" or "USB Device malfunctioned" error or "S.M.A.R.T. Capable But Command Failed" or some other BIOS error.
Currently there is no way to fix this type of firmware corruption at home. It is quite a complicated procedure and requires use of specialised expensive equipment and deep knowledge of hard drive design and data recovery technology.
Common Lacie Error Messages:
- Clicking / Ticking / Scratching / Grinding Sounds
- Not spinning, Not powering on at all

- Water or Liquid spilled on Hard Disk
- Accidental reformatting of partitions, Accidental Deletion of Data, Virus Problems
- Hard disk is unable to be accessed ( Inaccessible drive or partition )
- Unable to boot computer due to system getting dropped.
- The disk is seen in Operating System but asking to be formatted
