Apple Raid systems have been extremely popular over the last few years due to their good name and robust technology. While very good raid servers, Apple servers, like all other systems, they do fail. A sudden failure of the Apple Raid server can be caused by one or more disk failed in the raid array, Apple raid controller has stopped working or hard disks have become corrupted either on their own or from the result of an upgrade or rebuild. 99% of the time we can recover from these type of failures.
Recovery Process:
Depending on the type of Apple Raid system, the data recovery process can take several paths depending on the Apple Raid configuration of your server system.
In all cases all hard disks are imaged as part of our standard recovery procedure. This ensures the intergity of the original hard disk's.
We then work with the hard disk images to process the Apple Raid system by recompiling the data. This process depends on your Apple Raid configutation but often involves de-stripping or recompiling the hard disk images and then processing the data.
We are the only data recovery company that images all hard disks before and after de-stripping-recompiling to ensure the highest possible chance of recovering your data.
If you are unsure what the file system configuration is we can also determine the configuration for you.
Apple Server Raid Configuration:
Apple Servers support several different data storage configurations, which provide the owner/business of the system with different data protection levels and different recovery chances if the Apple Server fails.
RAID 0: Data is distributed across the drives. This is the best-performing configuration with maximum data capacity. A single drive failure causes loss of all the data. This method is gradually getting replaced with other raid configurations but is still being used in basic Apple systems.
RAID 1: In this configuration two shared disks are mirrored. This configuration provides great speed but only half of the potential storage capacity. This configuration is rarely used on Apple servers but we still see some Apple systems with this configuration. Normally the only time we see Raid 1 been used on a Apple raid server is when the operating system is on a Raid 1 setup and the data volume is on a Raid 5 setup.
JBOD: This ensures full storage capacity and good performance. Single drive failure may cause all data loss. We see this very rarely on a Apple server.
RAID 5: This is now the most popular and the default for the latest Apple Raid servers. Data is distributed across the drives using backward parity rotation. This configuration is fast but space equal to one disk's capacity is lost. The Apple server system will continue to operate normally even after single drive failure. 95% of Apple jobs we receive in are setup as Raid 5.
Apple Raid systems support different interfaces. Some of the interfaces supported include: Apple PATA Drives, Apple SATA Drives, Apple IDE Drives, Apple SATA Drives, Apple SATA II Drives, Apple SATA 2 Drives, Apple III Drives, Apple SATA 3 Drives, Apple eSATA, Apple SAS Drives, Apple SCSI Drives, Apple iSCSI, Apple ESDI Drives, Apple Fibre Channel Drives, Apple Firewire Drives and Apple PCMCIA Drives.
